Food Runners Recipients
Every day, somewhere in San Francisco, hungry
people wait. They wait for Food Runners to deliver excess food
from local hotels, restaurants, grocery stores and other businesses.
On Monday mornings, the mothers at Clara House wait for a delivery of fresh produce donated by Rainbow Grocery. On Tuesday afternoons the low-income seniors at the Sala Burton Manor wait in the lobby for Food Runners to drop off fresh, seasonal produce left over at the close of the Ferry Building Farmers Market. On Thursdays, the clients of North Beach Citizens enjoy a hearty pasta meal made especially for donation to Food Runners by Piperade. On Fridays, the disabled adults at Dorothy Day Community Center wait in the courtyard with shopping carts to help Food Runners unload a variety of groceries donated by Trader Joe's.
Did you know that every day, 160,000 people in San Francisco
don't have enough to eat? Food Runners is working hard to change
that. There are more than 300 soup kitchens, shelters, low-income
residences, senior centers, childcare centers and group homes
among Food Runners recipients. Food Runners delivers over 10
tons of donated perishable and prepared foods per week to these
agencies on a regular or rotating basis.
Who gets what? Food Runners carefully matches the types of food
donated to the recipient program's needs. For example: Food
Runners directs boxes of eggplant, crates of lettuce, and other
bulk produce items to soup kitchens such as Martin DePorres House of Hospitality, the St. Vincent DePaul Multi Service Center and the United Council of Human Services. Trays of ready to eat entrees are sent to smaller group homes and after school programs such as Thrive House in the Western Addition or Rypin's House in the Mission. Tenants of low-income residences and SRO hotels such as the Union Hotel in the Tenderloin or the Hillsdale Hotel in SOMA receive individually packaged foods, like sandwiches or other deli items that are easily transported to their rooms which may have no cooking facilities. Pastries work well at drop in centers like Talkline and Homeless Youth Alliance both located in the Haight. Members of the Mission YMCA senior lunch program in the Outer Excelsior love taking home a variety of breads and muffins delivered weekly by Food Runners.
Food Runners is committed to serving as many different shelters
and programs in need as possible in all neighborhoods throughout
the greater San Francisco area.
