Tres Bon
Shop manager Tom looked great. The kind of great that prompts
tourists to say “only in San Francisco.” The same kind of great
that makes locals smile with pride. Tom’s platinum blonde hair
swept back from his forehead in a bouffant that hovered somewhere
between high and too high. His precise, every-strand-in-place
coif bore the tactile quality of a Dianne Feinstein “do” circa
1985. His obviously pampered and carefully tanned skin served
to intensify the azure of his slightly down-turned eyes. The
day I met him he wore a fastidiously pressed shirt so orange
that I could have used a pair of Ray-Bans to keep from squinting
when speaking with him. Faux alligator slacks in some kind of
modern wonder fabric that sparkled even in the absence of glitter
encased his slender legs. He looked great.
“I’m so glad you came,” Tom said as he shook my hand. “I just
couldn’t stand watching this beautiful food get thrown away
at the end of each day. Thank goodness that from now on it will
go to people who need it.” Thus began Food Runners daily pick
ups at one of San Francisco’s newest and loveliest bakeries,
Patisserie Philippe*. Can’t make it to Paris this summer? Don’t
fret. Just high tail it down to 655 Townsend between 7 th and
8 th to enjoy classic French confections meticulously prepared
with only the highest quality ingredients by Chef and co-proprietor
Philippe Delarue. Indulge yourself with a financier or an elegant
croquembouche knowing that Patisserie Philippe’s daily excess
gets donated to Food Runners. Just imagine how good Chef Delarue’s
palmiers and quiches feel in the belly of a fellow San Franciscan
whose last meal came out of a dumpster. Together with Food Runners,
Patisserie Philippe is making a difference, one day and one
bite at a time.
Is your local market throwing away unsellable but still viable
food? Is your office throwing away nutritious food from in house
breakfasts and lunches that were over ordered?
Tell them about Food Runners. We’ll pick up their excess food
with a smile and deliver it to a local shelter or Food Program.
